[Chapter-delegates] Update to Chapters on the ISOC 2012 Business Plan

Absolutely. There is a chapter delegates email list that goes to all
chapter members. We haven't created an email list that goes to all members,
simply because many of those who wish not to be associated with a chapter do
not want, for similar reasons, to be contacted by us. So if you want to send
something broadly to all chapter members you can simply use:
chapter-delegates at elists.isoc.org
Keep in mind that someone here will have to approve that it be sent. And
then off it will go! Gook luck, Mike and take care.

Ted--
Thanks for responding so quickly to my questions. The information you
provided is very helpful.
To answer your question: I'm not aware of our working with any ISOC staffer
about the IPNSIG membership, but Konstantin (copied here) would know better
than I.
Is there any process for chapters to leverage global ISOC for broadcast
communications? Does some platform already exist for proposing global
communications for review by global? Is that something I should reach out to
Wende Cover (or someone else) about?
Thanks so much for the response. We're looking forward to working with you
in the future.

Mike,
Great to hear from you. Thanks for taking the time to read my email.
Our 2012 budget calls for financial assistance to chapters for website
development and hosting as well as the availability of templates for many
different web pages. The details of the program will be available by the
end of January but I will do whatever I can to get updated, detailed
information to everyone sooner if possible.
Regarding an enhanced ability for Chapters to manage their membership, we
expect to have the upgraded engagement platform beta version in March.
We've received a lot of comments how to improve this so we'll be looking for
feedback from Chapters who want and need to put the new application through
its paces.
As far as the IPN mail list, I'll be happy to look into this. Were you
working with any staffer that you recall? Let me get back to you by Friday
with what I've got.
Thanks again,
Ted

Ted-
Your email was both encouraging and timely. Konstantin Kalaitzidis and
myself are both core team members of the San Francisco Bay ISOC Chapter.
I've copied Annalisa Roger. She's the co-chair of the SF Bay Chapter, and I
believe the two of you met recently at the ISOC Board meeting in Dakar.
We are looking to significantly revise and improve our web presence. Can you
tell us what kind(s) of assisting might be forthcoming from global ISOC, and
the time frames within which that assistance might become available? That
will help us very much in finalizing our plans for submittal to the Chapter
Board for approval.
Also, your email mentioned assistance in managing membership. That also
would be very helpful. Simply having better access to the membership
database would really help us drive more visibility and engangement with our
~500 Chapter members.
Finally, we are working with Dr. Vint Cerf, some scientists from JPL/NASA
(Adrian Hooke and Scott Burleigh), and some major universities to
participate in the planning of a proposed Chapter project to develop an
integrated architecture for an Inter-Planetary Network. There was an active
ISOC special interest group at one time, but it has not been active for the
last four to five years. Is there any way to get a list of those folks who
were members of the IPN SIG, or would it be possible to work with you to
send a global message announcing the "resurrection" of that SIG, and
inviting interested ISOC members to join?
Thanks much for any help or guidance you can provide.

Dear Michael,
The most recent meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Internet Society
held in Dakar prior to ICANN 42 was a testament to a strong collaborative
effort and an alignment of objectives for our work and our organizations.
The business plan, approved with minor adjustments, will be printed and
publically available on our website in the near future. As I will be
visiting and addressing chapters both here at ICANN and at the upcoming
INETs in Bangalore and Bucharest, I want to take this opportunity to share
my enthusiasm with you and to mention a few areas where ISOC chapters will
see significant benefit in 2012.
As we all understand, The Internet Society Business Plan for 2012 rests on
the pillars of our four overarching strategic goals:
- Fostering an open, innovative, and trusted Internet worldwide
- Advancing policies and strategies that strengthen the Internet's growth
and evolution
- Empowering people to achieve human potential through unencumbered Internet
use
- Enabling a vibrant organisation and vital global community to advance the
Internet's future
Our chapters have significant roles to play in the achievement of each of
these goals. ISOC will continue to increase our investment in support of
chapters in a variety of ways, as many of you have expressed. For example,
in 2012 there will be increased expenditures in chapter tools including
web-hosting, membership management and overall chapter administration.
There will be additional support for community grants by way of training,
templates and ISOC staff resources. And we will look for additional avenues
for chapter voices and interaction with other key ISOC stakeholders.
By its clear and engaged support of the 2012 ISOC Business Plan, the Board
of Trustees has provided a strong statement that Chapters continue to be key
components of ISOC's ability to deliver on our shared mission. ISOC chapter
support staff recognize that the quality of our mutual engagement locally is
a cornerstone for the success of an open, resilient and secure Internet for
Everyone. I look forward with great optimism to working with all of you in
continuous pursuit and delivery of this goal.
With respect,
Ted Mooney
