Dear members,

As you may know, the IGF Secretariat opened the call for 2011 IGF workshop
proposals at http://www.intgovforum.org/cms/w2011 Proposals should be in
English and submitted by 15 April 2011.

The themes for 2011 are explained in detail in the draft program paper:
http://www.intgovforum.org/cms/2011/programmepapers/ProgrammePaper.21.03.11.
pdf

1. IG4D / Internet governance for development (IG4D) (What are examples
of specific global Internet governance issues that may have particular
relevance to development?)

2. Emerging Issues ("Is governance different for the mobile Internet
from the wired Internet?")

3. Managing critical Internet resources (including roles of
stakeholders, promoting capacity building, IPv4-IPv6 transition in
developing and developed countries)

4. Security, openness and privacy (this year, inter alia: implications
of efforts to block whistleblowers; blocking websites; filtering networks;
political actions to cut Internet access)

5. Access and diversity ("Internet access as basic human right: What
challenges and opportunities does this pose for policy makers and the
broader Internet community?")

6. Taking stock and the way forward (Questions about IGF contributions
to the development agenda and capacity building, how to organize for 2012
IGF?)

IGF date and location: Nairobi, Kenya on 27-30 September 2011 at the United
Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). Note that the hosts want to generate high
levels of youth involvement, bring in African ministers, and inject
discussions of youth and entrepreneurship; broadband; and the benefits of
NRENs for Africa. There will clearly be a focus on Internet Governance for
Development (in all sessions, not just the specific one).

ISOC's engagement plan:

The Internet Society is considering the possibility of submitting workshop
proposals on several topics such as DNS Blocking and Resilience of the
Internet. Past experience with the IGF shows that organizing workshops can
have two impacts: it provides an opportunity to feed our perspective into
discussions in a meaningful way; and it can serve as a good tool to improve
collaboration with a selected partner related to one of the topics.

If you plan on organizing a workshop, we would be happy to help you
elaborate the agenda or identify potential partners/speakers. Finally, as we
learn more about the 2011 IGF event and general agenda, we will engage with
our members by email and conference call.

Thank you and best regards,

Constance Bommelaer
