The
Nominations now open for Internet Society Research Awards

Apply between 11 April and 8 May 2011 for Fellowships to IETF 81, 24-29 July 2011, Quebec City, Canada

30th March 2011 - The Internet Society, in close collaboration with the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) today announced a pilot project that will sponsor outstanding researchers to attend and present their work at IRTF meetings. The IRTF is chartered to promote research of importance to the evolution of the Internet through focused Research Groups working on many topics related to Internet protocols, applications, architecture and technology as well as other topics of relevance. The programme enables award recipients to actively participate in the work of the IRTF and to get their ideas in front of people who are shipping code in Internet appliances today.

While much IRTF work takes place over mailing lists, many Research Groups meet during the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) meetings that occur three times a year.

Commenting on the programme, Mat Ford, Technology Program Manager at the Internet Society said: “It is vital that there is a mutual understanding and sharing of ideas and research problems between industry and research. With these awards we aim to facilitate this exchange, enabling researchers working on Internet-related topics to build an understanding of the issues being faced by operators, vendors, policy-makers and others. We also believe that familiarity with people and processes is crucial when it comes to moving research results out of the lab and into industry-supported standards.”

Lars Eggert, incoming IRTF Chair and Principal Scientist at Nokia Research Center, said: “An Internet research award to present their work to the IRTF and IETF will be a mark of distinction to a researcher, similar to a ‘best paper’ award at academic conferences. ISOC’s generous support of this program will allow researchers to discuss their work both with IRTF researchers as well as the network operators, vendors and policy-makers that attend IETF meetings. This unique mix of opinions is not encountered at academic conferences and can highlight areas of follow-on research in the IRTF or elsewhere as well as raise interest for eventual IETF standardization.”

Award recipients will have an opportunity to present the work for which they are selected. Recipients will also meet regularly with mentors whose role is to introduce them to the people and working groups of most relevance to their research interests.

The Internet Society Internet Research Awards provide recipients with funding for IETF meeting registration and social event fees, a round-trip economy class airfare to the meeting, hotel accommodation, and a small stipend to offset incidental expenses.

How to Apply

Applicants are required to nominate a recently published, original research paper. The nominated work should provide a scientific foundation for possible future IETF engineering work or IRTF experimentation, illustrate the real-world behaviour of IETF protocols in operational deployments, or make an important contribution to the understanding of Internet scalability, performance and capability.

Successful nominees will be paired with a mentor who has been attending IRTF and IETF meetings and is familiar with their structure and culture. A mentor plays an important role in helping the award recipient understand how the IRTF and IETF work and how he or she can participate and contribute. The guidance of a mentor can enhance the experience of the recipient and help them focus on their particular area(s) of interest.
