Here in New York we had a "wrap up meetup". A nice contingent of network
admins showed up and happily debated arcane details as well as explaining
v6 and speculating on its future with some of our regulars. Reps from
WebAir, NYI, and NTT-America presented.
There was a general consensus that adoption is a three stage process 1)
networks (mostly there) 2) content (getting there) and 3) eyeballs (yet to
begin) , and we are about halfway through the process with the pace
accelerating at a satisfactory rate.
The point, made earlier in the Hong Kong panel - that a critical moment
would arrive when the commodity price of IPv4 addresses became so big that
it outstripped average operational revenue from same - was eagerly
discussed. Like Hong Kong it was speculated that that would be the crest of
the bubble, which would deflate rapidly.
The new security challenges provided by increased direct addressing were
another concern. It was suggested that much security would become the
province of devices rather than networks.
Geoff Huston's reminder in HK that v6 would mean the end of torrenting - as
there would no longer be packet anonymity - was not taken seriously.
Spoofing of mac addresses was considered likely. It was also noted that
torrenting is currently in decline as easier legit methods of content
distribution increase.
The meeting finished with a playing of Geoff's closing remarks in HK via
YouTube.
What I was surprised to find amongst those present was that they had no - or
limited - knowledge of ISOC. IETF the sysadmins knew, but not ISOC. I had
recruited them via nanog. (There was also a lawyer who showed up via
InternetWeekNY ) I was obviously very happy to bring them into the
chapter's fold. When I suggested we have a followup meeting to discuss
peering there was much enthusiasm.
Then we went off to a nearby pub for drinks where we were regaled with tales
of network shenanigans and other good stuff.
