I'm pointing out that they never were. Internet standards are made in the IETF; standards for the telephone system have historically been made in the ITU. The Internet uses telephone system technologies from the ITU, LAN technologies from IEEE, and other technologies both proprietary and otherwise, to support its services, but the Internet is defined by the IETF.
