Hi Michael

I agree - picisoc.org works for us because we represent 22 countries in our region, and it’s a lot easier to write than "pacificislands.internetsociety.org"

Dear all,

indeed the point of 'cool links' that Klaus made goes for all of us. We
operate our website on this exact premise, and our links are
persistent more or less since the previous millenium. Our isoc.nl
website has thus been able to gain a pretty good ranking over the years.
Shifting it around is a precarious thing - and might end us all on the
15th page of search results around the world. I think we've all seen
and heard people that never overcome that shock. The words internet and
society aren't that uncommon either, for a startup I'd sooner recommend
a unique short name ISOC rather than "Internet Society" - there are many
sites out there using these words and pretty important ones at that.

We do have InternetSociety.nl and have been using it dual stack with
ISOC.nl. I would recommend this as a sane strategy. Once
InternetSociety.nl outranks the other, we can perhaps think about
switching it off ;)

Best,
Michiel

ET> Where do we go (as chapters) from here ?
ET> I will not speak about the issues already raised (broken links ,
ET> URI , standards), but try to come with a practical one:
ET> - Almost every chapter made an investment in their website as
ET> isoc.** . In order to make a succesful transition, some measures
ET> wee needed before the transition. A minimum would have been to
ET> secure the new URL's. Now it's to late for some countries.
ET> Legitimate users or Squatters are already there. For example ,
ET> Germany is taken. France is Taken, too. Most of internetsociety.**
ET> CCTLD's are still free , thus squattable big time. I would be VERY
ET> angry if someone will take internetsociety.ro ( .ro is free, anyone
ET> can register ). Last but not least , an incentive like
ET> country.internetsociety.org given to each and every national
ET> chapter would be nice to have. The practical question is : Who is
ET> in charge of securing the internetsociety.** sites ?? HQ ?
ET> Chapters? Nobody? What about the planning ? In some countries we
ET> need to show the trademark so it will take time. For countries
ET> where is free to register a cctld , i would start now. In fact , i
ET> will stop writing and start registering internetsociety.ro , but
ET> what about the other countries ??? How do we solve France and
ET> Germany situation ? It would be messy to have isoc.** in some
ET> countries and internetsociety.** in others. New users would not
ET> understand.
