Internet Society Announces New Board of Trustees

Leaders from industry, academia, and the Internet community to provide
strategic direction on Internet related standards, education, and policy

[WASHINGTON, D.C., USA and GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – 01 August 2011] – The
Internet Society today announced its new Board of Trustees, comprised of
distinguished leaders from across the global Internet community. The board
members bring to the organization a broad cross-section of experience and
global perspectives, as well as a keen interest in making a positive impact
on the future of the Internet.

The new Board members with terms beginning this year are:
* Alain Patrick Aina, Managing Director at Technologies Reséaux & Solutions
and Special Project Manager at AfriNIC (the Internet Address Registry for
Africa) 
* Theresa Swinehart, Executive Director, Global Internet Policy for Verizon
Communications 
* Jason Livingood, Executive Director of Internet Systems Engineering at
Comcast, was appointed to occupy a vacated Board seat

Several reappointments were announced at the Board meeting, held 30-31 July:
* Raúl Echeberría, Executive Director of LACNIC (the Internet Address
Registry for Latin America and the Caribbean) was reappointed as Chair of
the Board
* Bert Wijnen, Research Engineer at RIPE NCC, was reappointed by the IETF
for a second term on the Board

“It is an honor to continue serving as Chairman of the Internet Society and
to work with my colleagues on the Board in support of the organization’s
important mission. Our new Board of Trustees reflects the Internet Society’s
long-standing tradition of bringing together diverse and highly experienced
individuals with a shared interest for maintaining the growth and evolution
of the global Internet,” said Raúl Echeberría, Chair of the Internet
Society’s Board of Trustees.

During its meeting, the new Board formally thanked outgoing board members
Daniel Karrenberg and Alejandro Pisanty for their outstanding service and
commitment.

Other continuing Members of the Board of Trustees are:
* Eric Burger, Independent consultant 
* Narelle Clark, Independent consultant and Vice-President of the Australian
Chapter of the Internet Society 
* Eva Frölich, Co-founder of Frobbit! 
* Bob Hinden, Check Point Fellow at Check Point Software 
* Khaled Koubaa, Founder of the Arab World Internet Institute 
* Philip Smith, Director of Learning and Development, APNIC
* Lynn St. Amour, President and CEO of the Internet Society, serves as
ex-officio and as a non-voting Trustee 
* Jonathan Zittrain, Co-founder of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society
and Professor of Law at Harvard University 

“The Internet Society's organizational membership spans commercial,
industry, academia, NGOs, and government, and more than 50,000 individual
members in over 90 Chapters around the world. The breadth of experience and
diversity across our Board of Trustees is truly impressive and we are all
united by a common vision that the Internet is for everyone,” said Lynn St.
Amour, President and CEO of the Internet Society.

During the meeting, the Board of Trustees re-elected Eva Frölich as
Treasurer and Scott Bradner as Secretary. Mr. Bradner has dedicated many
years of outstanding service to the Internet Society, serving on the Board
of Trustees from 1993-1999 and as Secretary since 2003. 

Trustees serve in the interest of the Internet Society as a whole, and are
appointed or elected by the following groups: Chapters, Organization
members, and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). More information,
