The Internet Society welcomes Huawei as Silver Organizational Member

RESTON, VA, USA AND GENEVA, SWITZERLAND, 18 November 2010 - The Internet Society today announced that Huawei, a leader in next generation telecommunications networks, will become a silver level organizational sponsor in 2011. Huawei’s commitment builds on the company’s recent sponsorship of the 79th Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) meeting in Beijing.

“Organizational sponsors are important for the delivery of many key Internet Society initiatives, and we welcome the recent multiyear commitment from Huawei,” commented Lynn St. Amour, Internet Society President and CEO. “We are dedicated to ensuring the open development, evolution and use of the Internet for the benefit of people throughout the world. This investment will enable us to continue to deliver against that vision through our work which spans Internet related standards, education, and policy.”

Huawei became the first private Chinese company to join the Internet Society as a member in 2008 and is now among the first organizational members to make a multiyear member commitment.

Zhang Xiaojun, Director and Head of Network Research Department, Huawei, added: “Huawei is committed to the financial and technical support of open Internet standards. We support the Internet Society’s mission and the vital role the organization plays within the Internet ecosystem.”

In addition to its generous membership commitment to the Internet Society, Huawei has recently committed sponsorship to Tsinghua University in support of the 79th IETF meeting in Beijing. This first IETF event in China brings together approximately 1,300 Internet technologists in Beijing, China on November 7-12 where they will discuss the Internet’s most challenging technical problems in areas including: routing, transport, security and applications.

In recent years, Huawei has worked with organizations such as the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and has been recognized as one of the most active participants in Internet Protocol world standardization. To date, Huawei has submitted 38 RFCs, 85 WG drafts, and 286 active drafts to the IETF, which focus on routing, multicast, IPv6, security and encryption, point-to-point, applications, PTN, as well as other leading developments.
