All,
As you may be aware, ICANN has an open comment period on two proposals
related to DNS security posted to its web site:
1. Proposed Strategic Initiatives for Improved DNS Security,
Stability and Resiliency (SSR)
<http://www.icann.org/en/public-comment/#strat-ini-ssr>
2. Global DNS-CERT Business Case
<http://www.icann.org/en/public-comment/#dns-cert>
Also, at the recent Nairobi meeting, ICANN President and CEO Rod
Beckstrom made a statement to the GAC about the state of DNS Security,
where he said (in part):
"What I want to share with you as representatives of many Governments
of the world is that the DNS is under attack today as it has never
been before... The DNS is more fragile and vulnerable today than it
has ever been and it could stop at any given point in time,
literally...."
Attached is a letter that ISOC is proposing to send to the ICANN Board
to express concern about these developments. I think you will find it
self explanatory. While we are supporters of ICANN, and work closely
with them on a broad range of issues, as friends we feel it is
important to speak plainly when we think there are things they should
consider more carefully in their work. The attached draft is meant in
a spirit of constructive and collegial comment.
Particularly because the proposal for a global DNS-CERT and the
accompanying strategy may be of particular interest to you, I want to
share the draft note and to seek your views on its content. Because
the deadline for comments is April 14, 2010, I would really appreciate
it if you can send me your comments as soon as possible, but not later
than FRIDAY, APRIL 9, so I will have time to consider them as I put
together the final version.
Thank you in advance for your contributions to this effort.
kind regards
Bill
