Dear Chapter Delegates,

Due to recent developments regarding the situation of several
chapters, I would like to share with you the views of the ISOC Board
of Trustees on this topic.

The ISOC Board of Trustees recognises that active Chapters are at the
heart of ISOC's success. To support this important work, the Board
has worked closely with staff in the last year to provide strategic
input to the Chapter Development Plan. This has entailed close
examination of the status of the Chapters, together with a review of
the complementary programmatic efforts to assist Chapters to become
successful.

I am pleased to report that the Board is happy to see that a
significant number of ISOC Chapters are active. The Board wishes to
see concerted and continued effort from staff to help Chapters in
difficulty through a process of rejuvenation and to close inactive
Chapters. Recent closures have included Gambia and Brazil.
Examples of recent rejuvenation activity include the Washington DC
area Chapter which is once again very active (see: http://www.isoc-dc.org/)
, the Geneva chapter which is now on a path to rejuvenation and may
become a Swiss Chapter and there are many more examples. In most
cases, the rejuvenation processes undertaken are to reach out to
members and to recruit new ones, which gives a larger pool from which
new leaders can emerge with new energy.

The Board is strongly supportive of the Chapter closure and
rejuvenation process and we urge staff to continue with this important
work. As ISOC continues to expand its membership, we expect to see
more rejuvenated Chapters in the year ahead. This is a successful
indicator of the improving health of ISOC as an organisation with
impact and influence achieved through the collective actions of its
members, stakeholders and staff.

Best Regards,

Raúl Echeberría
ISOC BoT
Chair
