Dear Khaled,
Thank you for your note and questions.
As you know, ISOC is active in an increasing number of international
organizations, including the UN agencies, drawing on our global connections
and experience to provide input that is valued by international partners.
The fact that we speak with one voice, yet have been able to draw on local
experiences and information is one of our real strengths. Similarly, the
fact that Chapters and Members are able to use insights from ISOCs
international activities to inform and enliven their activities makes them
stronger and more vital than would otherwise be possible. The organization
has found that, in that way, ISOCs global presence and ISOC Chapters and
Members presence at the regional, national and local levels are
complementary, mutually supporting and bring great strength.
Our experience with the lengthy process of getting ECOSOC accreditation (it
took us over three years to complete it), as well as official recognition in
an increasing number of international organizations, shows that for small
and medium size NGOs, having a consolidated international focus really
facilitates the accreditation process, and enhances the value to both sides
in these relationships. In this regard, I think the best strategy for
chapters might be to engage at the city, local, national or regional level,
at one level to support ISOC's principles and goals, and at another to share
what they learn from association with others around the world.
In any case, as we have always done, ISOC HQ will continue engaging and
consulting with its Chapters and organizational members as we now grow our
participation through this ECOSOC accreditation, and specifically in the
context of discussions on the future of the Internet Governance Forum and
enhanced cooperation.
I will be back from vacation in two weeks and would be delighted to answer
any of your questions on the phone if youd like. Bill Graham is also
available to answer any of your questions.
Thanks,
Constance

Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
Thank you Constance.
What real implication on chapter level by obtaining such status ?
In another hand as Chapters are almost all of them established national
organizations since many years now and are also eligible to apply for the
same status. What will be the good strategy that we should put in place ?
could we encourage chapters to apply ? or this will be up to the chapter
leaders ?

Dear Members,
This is to inform you that the Internet Society now has an official
Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
We had applied for this status in 2007 and our accreditation was approved
yesterday, in New York, by ECOSOC Member States.
This is an important step for ISOC as it gives the organization the
opportunity to become an even more important player on all the issues of
interest to us in the UN context, such as current discussions about the
future of the IGF and enhanced cooperation, and the many possible
discussions of Internet topics that may come up in the UN and its agencies
in future.
ECOSOC is the central forum for discussing international economic and social
issues and for formulating policy recommendations addressed to Member States
and the United Nations system. ECOSOC is responsible for promoting higher
standards of living, full employment, and economic and social progress;
identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems;
facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation; and
encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
NGOs that are formally recognized with consultative status are entitled to
accreditation which allows them to participate in relevant United Nations
conferences and preparatory meetings.

PS: A report will follow shortly on recent developments regarding the IGF
and enhanced cooperation processes which were both discussed by ECOSOC last
week as well as yesterday.
