Internet Society Community Grants To Support Worldwide Educational and Technology Projects
12th Round Community Grants Programme helps extend Internet’s reach and to bring its benefits to people everywhere.”
The Internet Society today announced the recipients of its latest round of community grants. This diverse group of projects from all corners of the globe address issues such as education, local governance and policy development, with a strong focus on currently underserved communities.
The Internet Society Community Grants Programme donates grants of up to US$10,000 for a diverse cross section of projects that promote the open development, evolution, and use of the Internet for the benefit of all people throughout the world.
The projects funded in this round comprise:
Telecenters of Hope in Colombia – A pilot project by the Internet Society Colombia Chapter to provide a center where people with disabilities can be trained in Internet access and other Internet-related skills.
Disability Training for Chapters – The Internet Society Australia Chapter will use the grant received todevelop modular training tools for other Chapters to use to inform their memberships and the broader Internet community of the social benefit in assisting people with disabilities to use the Internet.
Strategies for Internet Regulation in Poland – The Internet Society Poland Chapter aims to build an educational programme that will clarify key Internet related issues, designed to address the needs of key stakeholders, the general public and the media.
Model « i-sustainable » - This Internet Society France Chapter project aims to create a tool that will enable every digital project owner or ICT sector firm to assess how to implement sustainable development.
Information Security and Assurance Training Center: This Internet Society Togo Chapter project will creating an Education Center for Cyber Security and Information Assurance that will help meet the region’s need for cyber security technicians.
Armenian Internet Exchange – The Internet Society Armenian Chapter will create an Armenian Internet Exchange. This will help improve Internet connections both within the country and outside, and is likely to boost the level of national online content.
Enabling the People of Ibanda to Access the Internet: – This initiative will see the creation of the first Internet Centre in the Ibanda Sub-county in Uganda.
Internet School for Farmers – In Sri-Lanka the grant will enable the creation of elearning courses for local farmers to learn about sustainable agriculture practices. An online community portal will be created with content covering topics including; sustainable agriculture, soil erosion, water pollution, livestock and composting,
Broadband Bridge - Through this project, everyone living in the Bloomingdale and Eckington neighborhoods of Washington, DC will benefit from low-cost equipment and Internet access. By sharing skills and technology among neighbors, the project will advance local capacity to shape the Internet.
Establishing the Palestinian Sugarlab – This project aims to support Free and Open Source Software development to increase the penetration and adoption of OLPC systems within Palestinian organisations in addition to creating job opportunities in the Gaza strip for ICT professionals and recent graduates.
Understanding Ethiopia’s Digital Economy Rankings and the Implications on ICT Policy and Strategy – This initiative takes the form of a pilot study that seeks to understand the full extent of the country’s digital lag, with particular focus on the benchmark indicators that force down Ethiopia’s digital rankings. This data will be the starting point for the creation of a plan to address the shortfall.
Internet Society Community Grants are awarded twice each year. The next round of the programme will open in March 2011.
