For what is worth, I've stumbled into threads of discussion in Italian
on Facebook where people actually believe that the domain name was taken
down by ICANN and that the Wikileaks affair is a proof of how bad it is
that the US control the Internet through ICANN.
Also, at least here in Europe, people would expect regulators to step in
whenever private parties do something bad (and a service provider taking
offline a domain name for political pressure is definitely bad) and
defend registrants from this kind of situations.
I'm sure that ICANN will get some public backlash from what is happening
- and maybe ISOC too, if someone starts drawing the links between .org,
PIR and ISOC. So a public stance by ISOC could be appropriate, but on
the other hand I see the difficulty of saying anything on a matter on
which opinions seem very polarized, so perhaps it's better not.
