Yes it's another ISOC-NY newsletter! The week is going pretty good in
NYC - most of the predicted rain failed to materialise, it's getting
warmer, and the Yanks are up 3-1!

First thing is, as mentioned last week, a great opportunity for the
more affluent among us to hear David Post give his "Jefferson's Moose"
talk at the Princeton Club on Thursday lunchtime. It's getting a
little late but I believe there's still room to squeeze in anyone who
fancies listening to this extremely erudite speaker in such salubrious
surroundings. The rest of you will have to wait for the webcast which
will, in due course, arrive on the ISOC-NY site:

Next we will plug the forthcoming WordCampNYC weekend taking place at
Baruch College on Nov 14/15. This event is a 2-day extravaganza of
presentations, workshops, and demos relating to the popular Wordpress
web publishing platform (as used by ISOC-NY!). A full pass is $40
(paypal) (includes t-shirt).

Those trusty folks that actually keep our national network afloat -
the North American Network Operators’ Group (NANOG) - held their 47th
meeting earlier this week in Dearborn, Michigan. Plenty of meaty
presentations, many of which are now available in their archive,
included the Internet Observatory Report 2009 we noted last week -
which includes some very good looking charts - and a number of
practical tips on transitioning to IPv6.

Further afield, next week ICANN will hold its 36th meeting in Seoul,
Korea. There will be plenty of opportunity for remote participation
kicking off with the At-Large Working Session on Sunday 10/25. Seoul
is 11 hours ahead of New York, so be ready to do without much
shuteye! If there’s just one event that one should consider putting
into one’s calendar it would be the Public Forum on Thursday (9pm-1am
Weds EST). ISOC-NY is happy to hear that, subsequent to our recent
forum that At-Large and the NCUC will be holding a collegiate meeting
in Seoul in which further attempts will be made to settle their
differences over the introduction of new constituencies in the GNSO.

While we are on the subject of participation in ICANN, it should be
noted that the public are invited to comment on current topics at
http://www.icann.org/en/public-comment/. Amongst the open fora is one
concerning 'Proposed Rights Protection Mechanisms in New gTLDs' -
which surprisingly, since this issue raised so much active debate at
the recent NYC consultation, has as yet received zero input! So if you
have something to say - speak up!

Lastly, as promised, video is now posted of copyright maven William
Patry's talk at Cardozo last week. The theme of his recent book ‘Moral
Panics and the Copyright Wars’ (Oxford University Press), upon which
he expands here, is that copyright is a utilitarian government program
- not a property or moral right - and as such must be regulated and
held accountable to ensure it is effectively serving its public
purpose. The talk was descriptive rather than prescriptive but served
to delineate anomalous areas deserving of fixes. Patry also professed
a fondness for the simpler schemas of the 1909 act.
