Greetings from the Internet Society's NY Chapter - if you are in NYC I
trust you have your raincoats and wellies close at hand.
We have a varied grab bag this week, including webcasts of last week's
ICANN Forum and Iran event, some new reports, some copyright events,
and a review of an ISOC chapters meet on the IPv6 transition, and news
about our tv program.

Past Events:
'Civic Representation in ICANN - What Now?'
Our forum last week was very interesting and educational, serving not
only to bring our members up-to-speed on the latest developments at
ICANN, but in bringing together representatives of the sharp divisions
in outlook between the NonCommercial and At-Large communities on the
current restructuring in the Generic Names Supporting Organization.
While we did not resolve the 'broad tent' versus 'constituencies'
debate on the structure of the NonCommercial Stakeholders Group,
participants noted that our forum was the first time they had had the
opportunity to talk things over face to face. We thank ISOC for the
funding that enabled this meeting. We webcast live to a sizable
contingent of ICANN notables and others - the recording can be viewed

‘Twitter and the Iranian Election Controversy’
This post OneWebDay event was held last Saturday in a library in
Forest Hills, Queens - remarkably easy to reach via the F express
train - and we thank Elaine Lee for doing the organizing. Speaker Ali
Emami turned out to be more of a facebook enthusiast than twitter, but
was emphatic about how 1) mass personal communication drove the
election protests, 2) the ability to perceive global awareness/support
sustained the protesters, and that 3) new methods of networking that
are not at the mercy of government monitoring/disruption are needed.
He was fascinated when the possibility of white space mesh networking
was mentioned. In one amusing anecdote he told of a call from his
mother in Tehran insisting he set up a proxy for her on his laptop.

ISOC Chapters discuss IPv6 transition
On September 22 2009 ISOC Chapters held an E-meeting to discuss two
new briefings on IPv6 deployment. Amongst the conclusions were that,
for competitive advantage and business continuity, stakeholders -
rather than sitting on their hands waiting for a ‘killer app’ or an
IPv4 ‘crisis’ - need to institute a robust policy of factoring IPv6
deployment into network ‘refresh’ cycles. Chapters can help by raising
awareness. Governments, in particular, can be prevailed upon to assist
the process by leading by example. Addressing is as important as
broadband, both are important enablers of innovation and growth.

'Moral Panics and the Copyright Wars'
ISOC-NY gained an invite at the last minute to this lunchtime event,
sponsored by the Intellectual Property Law Society at the Benjamin N.
Cardozo School of Law. The speaker was William Patry, senior copyright
counsel at Google. A noted expert, he is the author of the
seven-volume Patry on Copyright. Drawing upon such examples as the
crossover from compact discs to digital downloads, Patry expanded on
the them of his latest tome 'Moral Panics and the Copyright Wars' -
which argues that copyright is an economic function rather than moral
right, and it's sole purpose is to effectively serve society. ISOC-NY
did videotape and the results will be posted shortly.
