Dear Colleagues,

I am excited to announce a new Sphere Group : Sphere "translate". The
motivation for the group came out of the original Sphere interviews
where language and translation was identified as a need and of concern
to Chapters. Details of the new group are available below. Gerard
Ross has kindly volunteered to lead the group. If you would like to
join the project mailing list and take an active part in contributing
to the discussion, we would love to hear from you! Please email <chapter-support at isoc.org
 >.

Problem background:
While English has always served as ISOC's lingua franca, it is clear
that to more effectively serve the needs of a diverse global
community, ISOC must provide an increasing amount of content in other
languages. While many translated documents are currently available on
the ISOC web site, these have generally been produced ad hoc and there
is no structured programme in place for ongoing translation efforts.

Problem summary:
ISOC needs to establish a structured translation programme that will
provide professional, efficient, culturally sensitive translations of
an increased amount of ISOC content. The programme needs to make
effective use of the financial and administrative resources available,
while also making appropriate use of the skills and commitment of
ISOC's global membership and Chapter network.

Project target:
We seek to have a provisional translation programme in place by August
2009, with ongoing review throughout the balance of the year. The aim
is that a comprehensive, functioning translation programme will be in
place and budgeted for 2010 and beyond.
