Hello all,
since we at ISOC Netherlands try to actively promote internet
standards any way we can, we are happy to announce that we were able to
get a project started to promote ENUM (RFC 3761). Together with
ENUM.nl and SIDN (of .nl fame) we are now looking for implementors that
can create an open source demonstrator (or if budget allows, a number
of them) for ENUM. Below (and attached, in Open Document Format/ISO
26300:2006) you will find the Request for Proposals, and some
introduction on why ENUM is a very useful transition technology.
If your chapter, or people/organisational members within your chapter
can build or contribute to such a project, we would like to hear your
proposals. Deadline for applications (with an estimated budget) is
March 20th 2009 at 12.00. Of course we are also interested in your
suggestions, links to projects already available, etc. Hopefully the
result will be useful to other chapters as well.
Best,
Michiel Leenaars

Request for Proposals ENUM Demo
Michiel Henneke, Elmar Duiveman, Michiel Leenaars
February 20th 2009
Are you the creative individual or organisation that can help us
show the power of convergence between telecom and the internet?
Send us your proposals for an ENUM demonstration project.
We are open to all suggestions - from web applications, desktop
widgets, or applications specifically targeted at PDA's, game
consoles, netbooks or smartphones like Android and iPhone:
wherever your imagination takes you. Take the chance to hack on
some really cool emerging technology, promote open internet
standards and pave the way for all sorts of new business and
communication models!
Background
----------
ENUM is a new technology that links the world of telephony with
the world of the Internet. By doing so, ENUM can revolutionise
the way that individuals, businesses and other organisations
communicate with one another.
It allows Internet-enabled devices and applications dialling
ENUM-enabled phone numbers to skip telephony switching where
possible and beneficial. Because these services can stay on the
Internet, zero-configuration use of advanced online services
becomes possible, bringing cost savings.
So how does ENUM relate to Internet applications such as VoIP
(SIP), instant messaging, online certification, real-time text
and mobile web applications? Basically it is a lookup, allowing
you to publish contact data, security keys and settings in the
DNS. It really acts like your own personal information locker
on the internet. This means that anyone can use applications
based on those settings (VOIP, mail, instant messaging, real
time text, web) without having to use the PSTN network - but of
course one still can.
More important than how ENUM works is what it can mean for you,
the end user. With ENUM, in the future all you may need is
someone's phone number to get automatically get access to all
of their online communication modes as well as their security
credentials. That means if you have the tools you can see the
latest entries on someones webpage while you are calling them
on your phone, have them retrieve a personal ringtone and a
picture for your phone number as they dial your number, talk to
anybody over an unbreakable encrypted private channel over the
internet, set up a video call if the person you are calling has
that capability or make an appointment directly in someones
digital agenda. If someone has your phone number they can
contact you through a variety of channels - that is if you
choose to make yourself contactable via those channels, and set
things up accordingly. ENUM can also be used to set preferences
that can be recognised by applications; interesting
possibilities include bank accounts, public keys, VAT-numbers,
etc.
The wonderful versatility of the ENUM system together with the
trusted and broadly available identifier of the public phone
number underneath opens up a myriad of possibilities. Thanks to
ENUM, communication is no longer tied to any single location or
mode. The demonstrator project we ask from you will help us
show that to businesses and end users, and will be used as a
classroom example in tutorials on how to set up services like
the ones we mentioned above.
Who issues this RFP
Since 2008, SIDN has been responsible for operational management
of the ENUM infrastructure on behalf of ENUM NL, the
organisation with ultimate responsibility for the introduction
of ENUM in the Netherlands (see www.enum.nl).
Together with Internet Society Netherlands, SIDN wants to
promote the development of ENUM applications in the
Netherlands. Therefore SIDN is looking for parties interested
in developing ENUM demos in the form of tools and applications.
The target audience is technical professionals in ICT, telecoms
and the Internet. In such fields, ENUM has potential R&D
benefits and a proof-of-concept can be very valuable.
Purpose & goal of the project
---------------------------------
A good demo will provide potential application developers with:
- Proof-of-concept: ENUM is a usable DNS lookup tool for their
applications
- An open-source benchmark for development
- A visual demonstration of ENUM’s potential
The goal of the project is (please specify in proposal and note
deadlines):
- To provide an attractive, functional proof-of-concept for an
ENUM service for demonstration and publicity purposes
- To provide a step-by-step guide on how to build your working
service from open source components – so that other developers
can learn by doing
An example would be to program an ENUM demo for smartphones, e.g.
iPhone, Android,
Symbian.
Case description
----------------
ENUM can be used to launch applications from PCs and mobile
phones and to detect specific user settings. Possible uses
include automatic redirection of callers on the basis of their
settings or mobile transactions.
There are three possible areas for application development:
- Service interoperability: connecting telephones with web-based
applications and vice versa
- More efficient routing: connecting callers without using the
PSTN network
- Identity management: a lookup indicating where somebody’s
credentials can be found
Example: a customer calls a company from a mobile phone and,
depending on the settings, is automatically diverted to a call
centre, an account manager or voicemail. Meanwhile, a list of
FAQs about the company’s services appears on screen, along with
the customer section of the company’s website.
Other possibilities include publishing public keys for
e-commerce applications or more efficient routing for VOIP
providers.
Technical requirements
----------------------
- Covered by a version control system (git, darcs, svn, etc)
- Online (step-by-step) documentation available
- Code available
- Internationalisation (i.e. translation) possible
Other requirements
- Deadline for RFP: 20 March 2009 at 12.00
- Schedule: the demo should be launched before the summer of 2009
