[Chapter-delegates] Web Accessibility with private sector

Hello Mike,
Yes there are many people who have a lot of knowledge and understanding in
accessibility of websites and services via the web.
This book is indeed very interesting and a good starting point for people
who want to understand more accessible websites (and services).
There are many links and many groups working on info and small functions.
As I said in my previous mail, I would love to have ONE site, where ISOC and
the ISOC Chapters combine all the knowledge on web based services and
functions. And make that accessible with explanation how and actually show
how to do so. And the code/scripts/templates available for everybody.
Easy navigation, text to voice, Braille reader, subtitled flash video clips
(and audio description of the video), keyboard navigation..and more.
But if we want to do this. It is going to be an enormous pile of work and a
big team of people working on it.
And moreover such site must be maintained to include new functions and
implementations.
And what is the goal? Make a demo and resource for all people who are
involved in building services and websites using the WWW.
And such site can also be used as testing site for new input devices aimed
at e.g. people with a motoric disability. Or test a read-aloud text to voice
and possible new flash/comet etc versions.
Let me read the other mails and check the web links and we can then get a
group together to see what would be needed to pull this off. The more people
and other organizations pitch in, the better J
Thank you for the comments Mike.
Sincerely
Arnoud

I think Point 3 is an excellent idea.
Many of the members of the Disability and Special Needs Chapter know a lot
about this, in fact, three of them, Cynthia Waddell, Mark Urban, and myself,
helped write two books on the subject one of which can be found here
http://www.friendsofed.com/web-accessibility/
I think a project such as this would be an excellent idea.
We are poised and ready to help. One of the best things about it would be
it would bring a plethora of solutions to the table, and many cultures would
participate, which would be excellent!

Hi Franck,
Thanks for the link. I know Scott quite well. Great guy and he is always
very interested in my accessibility work at the IETF since 2000. J
This case does illustrate a few items:
1. The internet is becoming more and more part of the daily life.
Using a website (and internet services) is more and more essential for all
users. So people with a disability are just as hindered/disadvantaged as any
lack of accessibility in a physical store. See my letter of introduction on
the chapters wiki (Disability Nexus) on my views. So yes target must make
their websites accessible and the ADA also applies to any internet
site/service.
2. People with a visual disability are the first people who
encountered reduced to no access to the internet. (Internet started
mainstream as WWW, which was mainly text and pictures). But with the
oncoming multimedia avalanche, people with a hearing disability are also
more and more reduced in the access. (how often do you see YouTube videos
with subtitles?). The urge for nice multimedia websites also has the impact
on the ease of navigation for many people.
3. There is a lot of confusion on what would be a very good and
accessible website allowing people with a disability to have the same access
as anyone. There are a lot of activities there, but perhaps we should see if
all the ISOC Chapters can help on creating a global guide for a fully
accessible website helping web builders and organizations/companies etc to
ensure their website is fully accessible.
Is point 3 a good idea? What do you think?
By the way a remark Franck: " May be something your chapter could join as
part of the court process? " I am not a chapter J
I work with all Chapters (that is my intention and plan).
Also, I am wondering how we could do anything with the court process. I am
allergic to courts and lawyers and the whole stuff. I prefer bringing a good
solution that we can offer people.
Sincerely
Arnoud

Arnoud,
I wonder if you have seen this column from Scott. May be something your
chapter could join as part of the court process?
Seems to me an opportunity here
