Dear Anne,

thanks a lot for this introduction. I had the pleasure of meeting Arnoud
recently and have had a brief email exchange with him. He conveyed to me
some insights about how the present evolution of Internet content, towards
video and audio files, is regressing the progress that the Internet meant
for the deaf, for which I am very thankful. He also came through with a
warm, engaging personality.

I am sure that we will be able to do very good work in the chapters with
Arnoud, and thus also build on the many contributions made over the years
by Mike Burks and Cynthia Waddell, among others. And, the thrust for ISOC
to support and attend to people with disabilities, notably the
hearing-impaired, comes all the way from ISOC's foundation. If my
reconstruction is correct one force behind this was Vint Cerf.

When Vint Cerf and others called for the creation of the Internet Societal
Task Force, a few years into ISOC's life, attending to people with
disabilities was one of the emerging forces. For the couple of years
during which the ISTF was in ascent, Mike and Cynthia were energetic
contributors both to this field and to the societal impact of the Internet
as a whole.

We have therefore a deep-rooted history in this field on which Arnoud's
professional dedication will make it inexcusable for us not to make
significant progress.

(I am sure others will tell us more about this partially-told story.)

Yours,

Alejandro Pisanty
