All,

If you want to see the presentation that was last Wednesday, it is now
online. It was a very nice presentation, and thanks to FINTEL and USP to
make it happen.

George spoke that he did not remember when there was an Internet
problem, well if my memory is good, in the last 6months, there was a 8
hours outage in December and a 2 hours outage in February that can be
attributed to the International Gateway. Using this calculator
http://www.pixelbeat.org/docs/reliability_calculator/ we get an
availability of 99.77% or 20h downtime per year. In the example an hard
drive availability is about 99.95% while the graal of availability is to
reach the 4 nines (99.99%) or 5 nines (99.999%). The later is a downtime
of 5mn per year.

What is interesting to note from the calculator above, is that if there
were 2 separate links to Fiji with the same level of availability, the
downtime would be about 2mn per year. Quite a big difference!

Of course my memory can be failing, and I welcome some updated figures
on availability.

However Internet provided by FINTEL is already quite good if you look at
the overall time, but it is still shows the problem of one single point
of failure. Nevertheless, Fiji is getting there, and Internet is
becoming more and more reliable in Fiji, but we are not still at a level
to ensure mission critical operations.
