[Chapter-delegates] Update on preparations for IGF 2008

As I see the role of ISOC is really important on issues related to IG. By other side, IGF is one of multiple scenarios and, I believe, one of the most important one.

For ISOC Ecuador, IGF are one of this very rare opportunities to be in touch with the real world out there.

If there are some way to get officially involved I believe, this can be a nice opportunity for all of us. India is really a very nice and successful history in several areas and we have lot to learn from this kind of successful experiences.

The IGF is an umbrella for lot of issues which affect the digital and internet inclusion in several different ways.

    Hello Bill Graham,

This IGF happens well within the geographic region of ISOC India Chennai. What is the traditional role of the chapter in the region in IGF?

  Dear Sivasubramanian,

It is good to hear of your interest in the IGF. As the IGF is not in any formal way connected with ISOC, it is up to the local chapter to decide on their engagement. I don't know if the chapters in Brazil or Greece were involved in any way with the organizers of the first two IGF meetings.

The chapter has not been receiving communication from the organizers on this event and preparatory meetings.

Again, to my knowledge, the Indian government has not yet arranged any preparatory meetings. All meeting arrangement for the IGF are normally announced on the IGF Secretariat web site <www.intgovforum.org>, or on the local host's web site if they decide to create one. They haven't yet done so, yet. I believe it is the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology who is organizing the event. They posted a presentation about the planning process near the top of the same web site.

Good suggestion. We are past the deadline for proposing another
workshop, but as a MAG member (assuming I get re-appointed) I will do
my best to ensure we get those issues covered in the first main
      session workshop.

We should be clearer about that. The workshop proposals we put in are
definitely focused on the positive rather than the defensive. The IXP
workshop last year had a useful outcome, and we will be building on it
this year. Similarly, the workshop on multilingualism is designed to
broaden how people look at that issue -- it is a lot more than IDNs.
To really have an inclusive Internet is going to be a huge challenge,
and we should start focusing on how to make that happen. I agree that
the first approach many took to IGF was defensive. I believe that is
changing in a significant number of cases, and I'm hopeful the
Hyderabad meeting will have a very positive tone.

right -- it's a challenge of holding these things in all the different
regions. Even the regions themselves are very large. I don't know if
you are aware but a few organizations have made money available to
fund travel to IGF. Most of the cash will be aiming to fund people
who are going to be active participants -- who are organizing or will
be speaking in the main or individual workshops. I will see what I
can do to get the IGF Secretariat to make this visible on their web
site. In the meantime, ISOC members who want to get assistance
getting to Hyderabad should be actively looking through the lists of
workshops and contacting organizers to get involved.

Good points -- I have passed these along
