Last week I attended the inaugural planning meeting for OneWebDay 2008 in NYC.

The idea behind OneWebDay is to encourage people to think of themselves as responsible
for the internet, and to take good and visible actions on Sept. 22 that (1) celebrate the positive
impact of the internet on the world and (2) shed light on the problems of access and information flow.
Here is an introduction to this year's event:
OneWebDay 2008 falls on a Monday this year. It's not too soon
to start planning what you're going to do to recognize
OneWebDay in September.
The idea behind OneWebDay is to recognize the threats to the
Internet around the world - and to do something about them.
We want to make sure that people all across the globe expect
that they will have access to the Internet that isn't
controlled by gatekeepers of various kinds - network
providers and many other actors - and we want people to help
each other learn how to contribute to our Internet. The
Internet is us, not some collection of machines.
This double goal (recognize threats, do something about them)
can be met in all kinds of ways. The point is to have the
recognition of OneWebDay be visible, online and off. Getting
together in a public place to talk about the future of the
Internet is one way. Getting together to increase
connectivity in an underserved place is another. Helping
older people get online and learn how to use online
applications is yet a third way.
This is a very decentralized event. We have seen OneWebDay
events take place in dozens of countries around the globe,
and we're just beginning. You're in charge - OneWebDay is all
yours.

I am going to stay in touch and will update here as this year's event takes further shape.
