Dear All,

I'm about to leave the Chapter-delegates list. Before doing so, however, I'd
like to point out that the localization of the ISOC web pages does not seem
to follow any commonly accepted rules. Thus, e.g., the date of this news
item (when fi is indicated as the language) is in the form ": Franck Martin
: Kes 09 Apr, 2008[04:46 UTC]" in spite of the fact that the proper
rendering rules are available in CLDR (the Common Locale Data Repository),
maintained by the Unicode Consortium. Since vetted rules are available from
a common, well recognized source, they should be used whenever possible. In
this particular instance, the short month name is not localized (although
the short weekday name is), and the format for the date is not in any format
deemed acceptable locally.

There's also erroneous localization on the fixed left hand column. Some of
that is available in CLDR, and some could be addressed by reordering the
text, in order to avoid inflection that is common in many languages,
including Finnish.

I'd expect that ISOC should try their best to support the cultural diversity
of internet users. The required expertise is widely available.

Sincerely,

Erkki I. Kolehmainen
