[Chapter-delegates] Internet Society unveils new website design

Dear Philemon,

The system of chapter websites sharing an uniform domain, with central
storage space and bandwidth, which isn't going to cost much, would solve a
lot of problems.

1) on my own, I might choose a domain name such as inchenisoc.co.in.for the
ISOC India Chennai Chapter website which would be lost.

2) If I have to have incheenisoc.co.in listed in search engines and
directories I will have to spend a fortune. I may not be effective also.

3) I need to hire a webdesigner and I may not have the technical expertise
or time to coordinate with him, so I may end up with a website that is
shabby, featureless, or even dangerous in terms of vulnerabilities or even
unwittingly malicious content. I may get that site online unawares, but it
wouldn't speak well of ISOC

4) My website, despite the template suggestions from any from ISOC might be
blue in color, Australia's website woule be red in color and the French
might have a website that is green in color.. The common identity would be
lost

5) France might have some collaborative features which I may not have. Even
if France is willing to share the expertise I may not have the expertise to
build the same features in the Chennai website.

6) I may not be knowledgeable about where to host the website, so I might
end up hosting inchenisoc.co.in somewhere in a malicious webserver which
will would be down most of the time, with a mail server bannned in a spam
database to cause all mail messages from inchenisoc.co.in to bounce, which
would result in a waste of time for me.

On the contrary if there is a system of centralized hosting, storage and
subdomains, I will have a domain name as www.isoc.org/indiachennai or
indiachenai.isoc.org which sounds pretty nice.

This takes care of several aspects of "Corporate Identity". Several examples
can be found to understand how corporate identity is built up. For example
visit www.ibm.com or hp or dell or sun or apple and navigate to find their
india or australian websites which are locally managed.

Any regional IBM website looks blue and it all looks the same. Look at a
monitor with the ibm page from 20 feet away, you know that it is an IBM
website. Same should be said of ISOC. This is what Corporate Identity is all
about.

Those who have existing domains that are already familiar might still use
their known domains in addition to the isco.org subdomain.. They could set
up their domain name in their domain registires to point to the website at
the isoc subdomain.

Some Design Observations: The present isoc.org website looks functional,
neat and well organized. But this being the website of the Society that is
taking the responsibility of shaping the Internet, needs to have its website
refelect the most uptodate trends.

ISOC website does not have the Web 2.0 look ( I am using this expression
just to bring up a picture of something current ) Some examples of what the
ISOC Chapter website need to like are

http://www.openmoko.com/
http://www.genflux.de/
http://www.ebuddy.com/

The template has to be built in by default by the ISOC webmaster, the
chapters have to just modify the template to upload local content. It should
be as easy as cut and paste, copy and paste, drage and drop.

It requires a lot of thinking as to how to get the chapter websites
organized.

Thank you
Sivasubramanian Muthusamy
ISOC India Chennai Chapter.
