I thought you would be interested by what his happening here during the
ICANN meeting in Wellington hosted by Internet NZ. These are only
extracts, please refer to the full text pointed by the links.

I think it was a great week for the Pacific Islands and deals were made
and more technical support for Pacific Islanders.

Thanks InternetNZ and the NZ Government to make it happen.

Cheers

Govt open to faster, cheaper broadband

27 March 2006

*New Zealanders need better broadband access, but the Government still
has an open mind on how that will be achieved, Communications Minister
David Cunliffe said today.*

Mr Cunliffe reiterated to an international internet conference in
Wellington that New Zealand needed better, faster, cheaper broadband
internet access.

"The status quo does not meet New Zealand's needs."

Mr Cunliffe's speech opened the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names
and Numbers (ICANN) conference.

ICANN is the international organisation that assigns internet domain
names. It has also been integral in designing internet protocols.

Mr Cunliffe said he would also chair a forum of Pacific communications
ministers on Thursday.

A series of meetings would also be held on Friday, which has been
declared Pasifika information technology day, in a bid to highlight the
importance of the technology to the Pacific.

Accessibility and affordability are two key issues for Pacific ICT
    strategy meeting to work on

Posted at 8:25pm on 27 Mar 2006

The Solomon Islands internet service, the People First Network, or
PFnet, is being touted as the type of service that the rest of the
Pacific might also use.

Improving access to ICT is why officials from the 16 Pacific Islands
Forum countries meet from tomorrow in Wellington.

They are here to develop a regional digital strategy as promised under
the Pacific Plan.
