Helo Alex,
I have been on the airplane a lot this month and finally am pleased to be
able to respond to your email. Although the International Center for
Disability Resources on the Internet (ICDRI) cannot provide hardware and
software to assist you, we can certainly provide technical assistance
related to the user interfaces needed for people with disabilities.

ICDRI can also provide a training of trainers, over the internet, so that
webpages meet technical standards for accessible design. We are finding
that well-meaning organizations are creating websites that cannot be
utilized by people with disabilities even if they are connected. For
example, the website at
http://www.kenyanparaplegic.org/html/kpoinner.asp?pcat=about&cat=mission is
not accessible to people with disabilities.

ICDRI can also provide technical consultancy on products used to access the
Internet for people with disabilities.

We look forward to working with you on this project.

Best regards,
Cynthia Waddell

Thank you Cynthia,

On the 6th August 2005, I attended a gala night to mark the first
anniversary of the Kenyan Paraplegic Organisation (KPO).I was
overwhelmed to learn more than 75% of new paraplegics died in
under 5 years of being confined to the wheelchair because of the
feeling of "inability" to live "normally" thereafter.

Dr. Noraidah Artkin called on everyone to participate in KPO members
re-integration process, to save their lives, and to realise paraplegia could
happen to anyone anytime.

I promised them an appeal to potentially helpful organisations with respect
to use of the Internet as towards their the re-integration process.I am
scheduled to have an exploratory meeting soon on how this could happen under
ISOC and/or any other practical frameworks.

Could your organisation, The International Center for Disability Resources
on the Internet (ICDRI) and any ISOC members be willing to participate?

>From the top of my head the needs is as follows:-

*50 computers
*Internet link
*Routers, Modems
*Cabling and/ wireless LAN
*Computer Desks
*A few specialised PC physically challenged persons accessories
*Technical consultancy on product use of the internet
*Training of Trainers
*6 month support and follow-up

Indeed, confinement to the wheelchair does not mean end of life!

I have copied this message to Njeri Kahura, my contact person at the
organisation. For more details about KPO see
http://www.kenyanparaplegic.org/html/kpoinner.asp?pcat=about&cat=mission

Thanks,

Alex
