Dear Chapter Delegates:
ISOC is preparing to launch an exciting new program within the ISOC
community - setting aside funds for use in eligible projects. We believe
this will be a significant step in helping local chapters and members extend
the reach and benefits of the Internet around the world - in line with
ISOC's mission and goals
It is also our hope that this will be an outstanding way to help fuel the
local creative energy, imagination and initiative that ISOC Individual
Members and Chapters clearly have.
This is a new program and as such it will be launched and then reviewed in
future for ways to make it as effective as possible. This year ISOC has set
aside US$150,000 in funds for such use and we have placed certain parameters
around it in order to make funding available to as many projects as
reasonably possible in such a start-up year.
We anticipate continuing this program, depending on feedback from the ISOC
community, and will address future year funding as an annual part of the
ISOC Budgeting process. In this initial phase of the program the funds
available for any one project are up to US$10,000.
We have established a committee to handle this process and that committee
will be composed of at least three members of the Board together with three
members of staff: the Membership Director, the ISOC VP of Individual members
and Chapters and the Senior Program Manager responsible for Individual
Members and Chapters. The Board appointees to the Chapter Funding Committee
will be announced shortly.
These funds are only available to members of the ISOC community among the
Chapters and Individual Members. The projects to be funded will be those
approved by the committee after an application process - and they will be
projects that further the mission and goals of the Internet Society.
Preference will be given to multi-chapter proposals but that is not a
requirement.
The funds are expected to be used as a co-funding arrangement where another
sponsor or sponsors are also behind the proposal. ISOC will fund up to 50%
of any one project, subject to the US$10,000 cap mentioned before.
We are developing a website to explain this program, to set up an
application process and, in future, to highlight projects completed. We are
interested in your feedback - you can see the website mockup at this URL:
http://www.isoc.org/isoc/chapters/projects/index.php
In order to get this off the ground and to make funds available as quickly
as possible, we have established a program that we feel will be best suited
to accomplish this important initiative of making funds available in the
wider ISOC community. We are asking feedback not only on the website and
application process but on the entire program (and we ask for this feedback
on an ongoing basis) so that we can consider your input in perfecting this
program in future years.
As for the website and application process we are asking for feedback not
later than Monday March 28th so as to release this in the first week in
April. We then expect to have two funding rounds this year: the first will
be seeking applications in April with decisions by the end of May and the
second would be seeking applications in September with decisions at the end
of October. More details can be seen in the URL indicated above.
Please let us know what you think.
Thank you
