Gene and all other Chapter Delegates,

As you mentioned, Gene, we have certainly been dealing with our share of
problems. However, the award of the 2004 A. M. Turing Award to Vent Cerf
and Bob Kahn is more than an opportunity for some fun. It is recognition of
the efforts of the millions of us who have been working on and with the
Internet, some of us since almost its beginning in 1969, to make the
World-wide network and make it useful.

Your message also mentioned that all ISOC Chapters around the World share
evenly in the support of our recognition of Vint's and Bob's contributions
to us all. I heartily agree, and propose that the greatest support would be
for all chapters to join in on the planning for this web cast chapters
meeting so that everyone can feel connected to this Award event.

Since Vint and Bob are members of the DC Chapter, it make sense to have the
party there and on a date before the actual award ceremony.

All Chapters may not have the ability to receive a full video feed of the
event. Therefore we ought to look forward to comments and suggestions from
chapters that would like to show their support and how that might best be
done for their participation.

How about it, other chapter delegates? ISOC, Los Angeles Chapter looks
forward to participating in the planning and the opportunity to get our own
group together to share in the celebration of this very significant
contribution to our present.

All,

Much discussion of problems on our list. Heavy.

Perhaps time for a little fun?

I have a thought.

Two fellows named Vint and Bob are members of our local
Washington DC USA chapter of ISOC.

They wrote a college paper and came up with this thing called
TCP/IP. Has become rather widely used.

Both guys were principal organizers of ISOC and the IETF, have
been important drivers in the growth and success of both
organizations, and strong supporters of ISOC chapters.

Now they are getting an award. A really important one.

>From the ACM website:

The Association for Computing Machinery, has named Vinton G.
Cerf and Robert E. Kahn the winners of the 2004 A.M. Turing
Award, considered the "Nobel Prize of Computing," for
pioneering work on the design and implementation of the
   Internet's basic communications protocols.

I propose that ISOC chapters worldwide come together to hold
an appreciation evening for Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn.

They are members of our local DCISOC chapter, so I expect my
chapter will be pleased to organize the evening. I expect we
will be able to hold it at a location such as the U.S. Library
of Congress, or perhaps our principal national museum, the
Smithsonian Institution.

I think it best that all ISOC chapters join equally in
sponsoring the event to honor Vint and Bob. This should be an
international appreciation for Vint and Bob, not just our local
Washington chapter, not just a U.S. event.

Hopefully we can arrange to have the evening webcast, people
from chapters around the world participate and send their
congratulations via the Internet.

Could be great fun.

What do you think?
