Dear Delegates,
It seems to me that this whole discussion can be summed up to this:
1) ISOC HQ is looking for a way to verify who is a member
=> I agree that local chapters should be responsable for upkeeping this
information
=> I don't see how this should be related to monetary considerations
2) ISOC HQ is looking for extra money.
=> ISOC HQ took a big step in the right direction by making membership free
for individuals
=> If money is needed (even after the .org income) I agree that a donation
system should be enough
=> If you want to make extra levels of membership, the simple status of
"member" should be free and create extra status such as "patron member" to
show that one's been contributing
=> The same could be done with corporations that help out in some way or
another
3) It looks obvious to all that any money-based restriction to ISOC would
only accentuate the already very deep digital divide. (for the dozen of
reasons mentioned in today's massive flow of protest...)
I suggest that we all stop for a minute and let ISOC HQ think about what
they are trying to do and the consequences and see how they adapt their
policy to our comments.
Regards,
Eric Alloi, MA, PhD Candidate,
Administrator, ISOC Quebec
