[chapter-delegates] Executive Summary of the MMM #7 (1st Edition)

Many practical and fresh ideas appeared today in our July Real-Time ISOC
Monographic Monthly Meeting.
 
I want to thank our colleagues from Mexico, specially to Mr Aaron Benitez,
who today contributed helping to sort all the ideas.
To whom we owe this executive summary.
 
Thanks too for your "massive" assistence. If we take the number of chapters
who voted (44) in past election, as a gross stimator of Chapter-Activity...
today in our meeting we had concurrently 15 chapters represented, which is
more than a 33% of the activest chapters having voice, and growing :-)
 
It's amazing to have people from Senegal, talking to Luxemburg, California,
Washington, Indonesia, France, Spain, Tuvalu or Germany (among others) at
the same moment.
Thanks to all, for your participation. We'll repeat (as you'll probably
read) this Meeting this coming thursday in aprox 27h. 
 
And in AUGUST we won't have meeting. So we wait you this Thursday, otherwise
on September the 6th (tuesday).

Strategic Op Plan (SOP)
 

After a quick round of presentations, Jim Galvin and David McAuley started
talking about the importance of the SOP.
 
"We hope to enhance two things: communications and substantive pursuit of
ISOC’s mission and goals. "
 
"The Chapter Delegates will have access to the membership system being
rolled out now. "

isocdavid: Andreu and Rudi have done a very good thing for communications
with these MMM meetings and archives. 
franckhlmartin: ok
isocdavid: We are trying to organize regional meetings at venues of
opportunity (e.g. ICANN meetings, ISOC Board meetings, various training
events) - we 
 
want to do more of this if they work out well. We hope local chapters will
take lead on this. "
 
"I would like to emphasize the importance of the strategic plan. The ISOC
Board will use to guide all its future activities so it is real important to
give 
 
it read. This the first time ISOC has undertaken to have such a document"
 
Galvin: With that in mind, the chapter-delegates mailing list is the best we
have today to keep our chapters informed and to hear from our chapters. How 
 
well to folks feel that process works? What functionality would you like to
see in addition, or what would you like to be a more direct part of? Note
that I 
 
am not asking for specific technology suggestions. This is about principles.
 
franckhlmartin: On principles it would be interesting for ISOC to inform
chapters of any action/event happening in their constituency that ISOC
promotes
 
isocdavid: We try to do that in newsletter and we do try to announce things
on the list but we will try to get better at this Franck
galvinjamesm: We do try to send notices to the chapter-delegates list. There
is room for improvement, and we're working to keep ourselves better informed
so 
 
we can keep chapters better informed.

Newsletter translations
 

hero_tsai: I have an Idea for that newsletter, can we receive it a week
before its release so that we can translate it and send the translated
version back 
 
for publication along with the original ?
 
The main difficulties we face in communications process is the translation
for the members 
 
nelson_sanchez_1: we would like to work with the chapters to get more
translations in for the newsletter but it may have to be after the first
release in 
 
English.
 
txusquet: each month (or periodically in each language).
 
txusquet: For instance for Spanish, we have one person
 
txusquet: But we need some people who coordinate this 
 
isocdavid: But at bottom this is an offer to translate and that is very good
- can we get it translated by you on our release and then release the 
 
translation - this will expand the audience however it is done
 
acorenthin: At least can we chose only 3 or 4 main langages
 
txusquet: devoted in our chapter (ISOC-es)
 
patrick_vandewalle: Many members of my chapters tell me they throw the
newletters away as they cannot understand them
 
nelson_sanchez_1: unless people can contribute sections already in local
languages.
 
txusquet: who diggest monthly all the contents of the
 
txusquet: Chapter-Delegates List in spanish.
 
franckhlmartin: I agree for translation but do not want to delay anything
either...
 
txusquet: It would be really easy for us to distribute
 
fredbakersba: Just a thought. Would a better approach e or the chaper to
translate the newsletter and put it on its own web site? That would ensure
that 
 
local needs are met and reduce the "but you didn't do mine" frcition.

could exist in almost any language, and we would really look to the Chapters

support us in creating such translations."
 
fredbakersba: Is the "of the world" discussion regarding mandated language
support for ISOC HQ? If so, please note that societies like Wycliffe and
such 
 
have been trying to translate the Bible into all the languages of the world
for the past couple of centuries, and have funded zillions of dollars worth
of 
 
linguistic research to do it, including inventing written languages for
thousands of tribal languages. Nobody is saying that such a goal is not
worthy for 
 
ISOC newsletters, but it may be a trifle impractical.

fredbakersba: Practically speaking, we can hit the languages of our members,
by having some members translate for others. I thought that this was what we

 
were agreeing to...

whoever does the translation. We used to include the name and affiliation
years 
 
ago when the newsletter was first translated by volunteers. I would
certainly continue to do so.

Strengthening Chapters partnership within a region
 

galvinjamesm: We have one "regional" group, the Francophones. I think it
would be great to have other Chapters organize around their preferred
language.
 
isocdavid: It would also likely help foster regional meetings of some great
value
 
acorenthin: SOP says 6.3 "Chapters are expected to serve the interests of
their specific geographic or non-geographic segment of the global Internet 
 
community 
 
galvinjamesm: That is correct.

gene_gaines: We might have an "Anglophone" group ... that a poor joke .. but
a U.S. chapter group not a bad idea
 
hero_tsai: Disability Chapter, with Michael Burks and Cynthia Wadell
 
sbacholl: OFF topic: there are 3 people with mehere in Luxembourg that are
unable to be connect and to participate
 
it is important to highlight this issue within a "regional" coordination of
existing chapters 
 
rosadelgado1294: Somebody mentioned in this forum about every chapter is
different. Today chapters are defined geographically and by language but we
should 
 
also look at the speciality as some are more policy, technically,
development (dev countries) oriented.. We have the French and Italian
chapter having every 
 
year a conference on domain names/Internet governance. Perhaps we should
also put together chapters by orientation/speciality/value

After 1h 30 min of conducted debate we close the 7th MMM.
And we announce the Second Edition of this "get together" to facilitate ISOC
chapters and members to share fresh ideas on how to strenghten the 
 
"partnership" with ISOC.
