Dear Nelson,

publication.
kind regards,

ISOC-ZA activity Nov 2004 - Jan 2004
The Internet Society of South Africa is going through it's most active
phase since inception. Membership is growing consistently and in
January we obtained our 200th member. During 2004 we held 5 community
gatherings and completed three submissions to Parliament as part of the
South African policy-making legislative process. A great deal of time
and energy has been invested in our education and outreach portfolio
strategy and in 2004 we cemented our plan to follow the globally proven
(by other ISOC chapters) Internet Fiesta.
ICANN - World Blind Union workshop
On 5 December 2004 in Cape Town at the Cape Town International
Conference Centre, ISOC-ZA facilitated a joint forum between ICANN and
the World Blind Union on Internet Accessibility for the blind. The
forum was webcast for those that could not attend. The panel consisted
of worlwide experts including:
- Hein Wagner: International Sales manager for Thawte Consulting, born
blind and whose achievements include: marathon running, a Cape to Rio
yacht race, winning member of the World cup cricket team for the blind
- Vint Cerf: ICANN chairman
- John Klensin: IETF representative to ICANN
- Amadeu Abril: partially sighted Internet pioneer and ex-member of the
ICANN board, and
- Dave Williams: founder and CEO of www.acbradio.com
"This was the most useful and interesting session of the meeting", said
ICANNs CIO. A great deal was learned by all those that attended. It was
covered by local press, see http://isoc.org.za/community.html more more
info
Internet Fiesta
ISOC-ZA has completed it's plan for Internet Fiesta 2005. This will be
the first time Internet Fiesta is held in South Africa, a country where
more than 80% of the population has never seen or used the Internet.
The 2005 pilot Fiesta will be held in Belhar, a poor community in Cape
Town. We expect an attendance of over 1000 people who will get their
first chance. http:///isoc.za.org/outreach.html for more info.
Chapter-delegates
ISOC-ZA places a high value on collaborations with chapters in other
countries. During the past few months our committee has been
considering chapter-delegates issues and look forward to improved
structures and coordination. We remain very keen to work on a
collaborative membership management system.
Our chapter is open for anyone willing to invest in our Internet
society to join.
Kind regards,
Alan Levin
