I have been in touch with UN and UNICEF officials in
New York, including the appropriate organization for
my country, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF.
Their reaction to ISOC chapters undertaking to fund
and support the rebuilding of a school in an tsunami
ravaged area -- sounds like a worthwhile project,
done properly can be an important beacon of hope for
both children and adults in an area.
They have recommended as the next step to contact the
UNICEF representative in UNICEF Representative in
Jakarta, Indonesia. Further, they recommended waiting
several more weeks before beginning any discussions.
We discussed a number of the issues related to such a
project, such as the option of obtaining NGO status,
necessary permissions and coordination with the
Indonesian government, paperwork and coordination
involved, working as a project under the UNICEF field
office.
A first thought would be to consider taking on the
Banda Aceh Middle School for the project.
A necessary condition to any project going forward, in
my opinion, is the approval and enthusiastic support
of a local on-the-ground NGO such as the UNICEF field
office in Aceh Province.
