Lots of willful thinking during that time.  I have always treasured the 
panel you were on, with the OSI advocate from Boing, around 1990.  You 
had just commented that the TCP/IP world did not focus on formal, 
conformance tests but instead favoring actual interoperability exercises.

One or two people on the panel after you made their comments. Then the 
Boeing OSI advocate commented that interoperability required formal 
conformance tests.  With you usual deadpan face, you slowly leaned 
forward, turned your head to look at her, held it for a beat, and then 
sat back.
