When I first learned that the Irvine Ring had 1/4 of its real-estate 
devoted to a contention-based token-creation mechanism, I was pretty 
sure a contention system was going to win this particular technology 
debate.  It was simply simpler.  Pretty much no application required the 
predictability of access that a token system was theoretically capable 
of ensuring.

BTW, its benefits notwithstanding, thin ether was fragile and a netops 
pain.
