I hope you don't mind that this isn't history-oriented, but if anyone
has what I want it's this group. I'm looking for the old "no 53"
anti-ATM image, 53 with a barred red circle. It's for someone who just
turned 52.

I have the T-shirt with that emblem.  I think Jon Crowcroft made them.  I could take a photo.

I can't help with that, but it does remind me that in the 6net project
I worked with Jacques Saint-Blancat of IBM La Gaude, who confessed that it
was he personally who, as a WG Secretary, first wrote down the 48-byte
compromise payload size for ATM, which of course automatically produced
53 bytes as the cell size.

More recently I worked on IPv6 stuff with R?mi Despr?s, the X.25 designer.

Interesting that these guys showed up in IPv6-land.
