Dear Chapter Leaders,

Ireland’s Minister for Justice has stated that they wish to introduce domestic legislation that would give Irish police (An Garda Síochána) access to encrypted messaging services. As the minister has indicated a review of Ireland’s existing interception legislation, the Interception of Postal Packets and Telecommunications Messages (Regulation) Act 1993, is under way, therefore drafting of the new bill will begin in the coming months.

This open letter calls on the Irish government to reconsider their plans to undermine end-to-end encryption and calls on the Irish government to change its position on the issue at the EU level.

We are looking for organizations, companies, associations, and cybersecurity experts from around the world to sign on and demand that the Irish government protect strong encryption. Please share the call to sign on with your networks.

  * We are accepting signatures until 8 October 2025.
  * See the draft letter and current signatures, here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kdAuk4Th3rgqYXGHIP7gBvulEjFhrOOr9tOA9dDQalg/edit?usp=sharing

Many thanks to Olga Cronin for writing and organizing this open letter. If you have questions about it, please email olga.cronin at iccl.ie<mailto:olga.cronin at iccl.ie> and voge at isoc.org<mailto:voge at isoc.org>.
