Dear Chapter Leaders,

We hope you all are doing well.

Encryption continues to face threats this year, especially in Europe. In Sweden, the Riksdag (their Parliament) is currently debating legislation that threatens to undermine the use of end-to-end encryption.

The Legislation, known as the Swedish Data Storage and Access to Electronic Information Legislation (Ju2024/02286 Data lagring och åtkomst till elektronisk information<https://www.regeringen.se/rattsliga-dokument/departementsserien-och-promemorior/2024/11/utkast-till-lagradsremiss-datalagring-och-tillgang-till-elektronisk-information/>) would force platforms to store and provide law enforcement with access to their users’ communications, including those that are end-to-end encrypted. For end-to-end encrypted platforms, this means they will have to introduce encryption backdoors. See an article from last month about the dangers of the bill: https://cybernews.com/news/signal-sweden-encryption-backdoor-police/.

In response, we are organizing a joint letter highlighting our concerns with this legislation. The letter calls on the Swedish Riksdag to reject this legislation. We are looking for organizations, companies, associations, and cybersecurity experts from around the world to sign on and demand the Swedish Riksdag rejects this attack on encryption.
