Hi Joly,
This is actually a question for the group of SIG/SG leaders who were on the call last week and who shared their thoughts, updates and ideas related to the current SIG/SG processes within the framework of that working session.
Now, since there is interest in this, we can ask the group, when the summary of the call is shared and discussed, if they are comfortable with further sharing this with a broader audience than the group the initial discussion took place in. There certainly is nothing secret that was discussed, but we do want to respect the call participants’ expectations as to what audience they were/are communicating with.
In the meantime, we encourage you all to have conversations and explore opportunities for connections between SIG/SG leaders and chapter leaders, either via sharing SIG/SG achievements and upcoming plans on this list and/or by having our team help with introductions via sig-support at isoc.org<mailto:sig-support at isoc.org>
Best,
Christine

Permitting Chapter leaders to review this discussion might be a good first step.

Hello Joly, Nazar, all,
Last week’s meeting that you are referring to was set up as a working session for special interest group and standing group (SIG/SG) leaders to take stock of the current SIG/SG specific processes, explore what works well and brainstorm on additional process improvements going forward. We started the call with a round of introductions that included very short updates from each of the SIGs/SGs represented on the call.
Our current SIG and SG leaders are on this mailing list and we very much encourage them to share their achievements and upcoming plans here with all the chapter leaders. One of the practical and strategic things that became obvious on the call is the importance of creating stronger connections between our SIGs/SGs and the chapter community.
SIG/SG leaders and members can be brought into chapter activities and events when subject matter expertise and thought leadership on a given topic is needed - they are our community experts on many topics. Some of the global concepts, guidance and training developed by the SIGs/SGs can translate into local implementations via the chapters.
Here a reminder of what our current SIG and SG topics are:
* Accessibility
* Affordable Internet
* Artificial Intelligence (AI)
* Cybersecurity
* Gender
* Internet for Education
* Online Safety
* Youth
You can find out more about each of these groups here: https://www.internetsociety.org/sigs/
We are very happy to help make connections, you can reach the SIG/SG team at sig-support at isoc.org<mailto:sig-support at isoc.org>
Best,
Christine

Hi Joly,
Thank you for your observation. What is it that the current leadership and past chairs were discussing that cannot be share? Unless it was personal stuff of course.

All Chapter Leaders are excluded from holding more such a position with more than one Chapter, or any Standing Group (SG), or Special Interest Group (SIG).
The SG/SIGs at least do get observer status in the ChAC. So, although limited, there is at least some intercommunication.
There was a recent SG/SIG leader call, in which, I am told, those leaders talked about the achievements of their groups.
I requested to ISOC to view the recording, hoping to find something to pass along to Chapters/members, and was told "Meeting was for current leadership and past chairs and vice chairs."
Is this silo-ing a) necessary / b) desirable?
