Even decades later, the ghost of philosophy training haunts my language! This wasn't intended to mean "accident" in the vernacular sense of something that happens without anyone's intention, but instead the distinction between "essential" and "accidental" properties (a distinction, by the way, that has long fallen out of favour among philosophers). Anyway, the point is just that, to the extent there is an "I*" group, the Internet Society was never among the organizations that had direct operational responsibility for any of the IANA functions. (Also, the so-called I* organizations have long since expanded to include all manner of other people who never had any IANA function either, and some of the participants seem not to know that * is a wildcard operator, so even the name is obscure now.)
