If you look at the YouTube around 52m, you will see a post on the Chat to the effect that most of the publicity that ISOC has received as a result of the proposed sale of PIR has been negative.

 

And at 53m12s you will see a post from Richard Barnes stating “Hopefully there’s some truth in the maxim that ‘no such thing as bad publicity’ … but obviously there’s work to do to make that true.”

 

The maxim in question can be traced back[1] to P.T. Barnum, who allegedly said “I don't care what the newspapers say about me as long as they spell my name right.” [2]

 

Barnum was in the circus business, so what he said may have been true for him, and it may also be true for other show businesses.  But it is certainly not true for most organizations, activities, businesses, etc.[3]

 

No bank, lawyer, doctor, engineer, car manufacturer, airplane manufacturer, retailer, etc. would dream of thinking that bad publicity does not have a damaging effect. It can even have effects sufficient to put the company out of business.

 

ISOC’s ability to achieve its goals depends on its having a good reputation. For ISOC, bad publicity will likely have very bad effects. And it may not be so easy to turn that around.

 

But of course we can agree to disagree on this also.
