Hi all,

Hope you are all safe and healthy.

As a Sector Member of the ITU, Internet Society is actively participating in the World Telecommunications/ICT Policy Forum (WTPF) preparatory process, towards the next WTPF meeting in 2021.

>From the WTPF website:

“As set out in Resolution 2 (Rev. Dubai, 2018), the purpose of the World Telecommunication/ICT Policy Forum (WTPF) is to provide a venue for exchanging views and information and thereby creating a shared vision among policy-makers worldwide on the issues arising from the emergence of new telecommunication/ICT services and technologies, and to consider any other policy issue in telecommunications/ICTs which would benefit from a global exchange of views, in addition to the adoption of opinions reflecting common viewpoints.”

The process includes an open consultation on the draft reports written by the ITU Secretary General. The Third Draft Report can be found here . It is important to note, that the draft report contains topics of discussion to be used during WTPF-21. This consultation is NOT intended to answer the questions put for consideration to the Informal Expert Group.

We will make a contribution that takes into account our action plan 2020. The focus for this contribution would be related to the following sections of the draft report:

WTPF Theme [Section 2]: In this section support the high-level theme, fostering a broad discussion on “Policies for mobilizing new and emerging telecommunications/ICTs for sustainable development”
Connecting the unconnected [Section 2.7.6]: In this section support the need for a topic related to connecting the unconnected. The means to achieve this include: support of affordable complementary local access solutions such as Community Networks. Rely on Open standards everywhere, with built-in security features. Foster the use of available financing solutions in new and innovative ways, to keep connecting people, community by community, network by network.
Innovative Access Solutions [Section 2.8.6]: In this section support discussion on issues related with affordable access, complementary access solutions such as Community Networks and innovative uses of funding tools such as Universal Service Funds to connect rural and remote communities.

We would like to hear your views about the approach for the contribution, the process, and the document prepared by the Secretary General, by 10 June 2020.

Feel free to send your feedback directly to me (peirano at isoc.org) or as a response to this list. Looking forward to hearing from all of you.
