[Chapter-delegates] Join our call to stop the sale of .org

>From a relative newcomer's untainted-by-legacy perspective, I would like to
state what seems obvious, in the hopes of finding common ground.
It's clear that the first announcement from ISOC should've been to the
effect of: "Should we detach .ORG PIR from ISOC?" rather than "it's getting
sold." - and that the first release to the effect of a sale, if agreed
upon, should be such that it could read: "It is the consensus of the ISOC
constituents that the .ORG PIR should be sold."
It's clear that an acceptable response from ISOC, now, would be: "Oops.
We're sorry. We made a mistake. The process will be on hold while we
consult deeply and transparently with our constituents." (Or "ISOC issues
apology")
While I trust that the board that we elected is carrying forth our best
interests, and that this would shift the .ORG issues to a more relevant
platform - and that ISOC is not necessarily the place to discuss these
issues, detaching ISOC from .ORG PIR has pros and cons. If people feel more
free to discuss this issue in ISOC, then that bodes well for ISOC as a
platform for inclusion and consultation, and representation, and we can and
should play to this as a strength.
This blunder could be a blessing in disguise - if we can use this
opportunity to set an example to the world in being able to self-correct -
on how to deal with controversy, and how to be more inclusive and
consultative.
The main concern, seems to me that common sense would seem to dictate that
the new PIR owner would demand a 10%+ return on their investment, which
would translate into a doubling of .ORG fees, or if they want 20% even a
quadrupling - unless they have a plan to generate a return in some more
confidence-inspiring and ethical way - such as radically expanding the
market - which, considering the reach of the buyer, is a real possibility.
Even in the face of what I can only describe as a really impressive
backlash. This, I think, is what the backlash is about - as we are not
informed of the details, and being the huge organization that we are, we do
not yet feel as represented by our board as we would like to be. Again,
this could be an opportunity to take steps toward remedying this.
I write this in the hopes that this can help frame the discussion in a more
constructive way.
