[Chapter-delegates] Opt-in & GDPR Update

Good Day Chapter Leaders, please excuse the cross-post of this elist and the Chapter Leaders forum on Connect as I wanted to make sure this message went as wide as possible.

 

Thank you for your various points and feedback. As you have all surmised, this has not been an easy process and that interpretation of the law is still very diverse. Some of you have asserted that maybe we should have used "compliance by default”, like many companies have done. At ISOC, we do not believe we can use compliance by default because we believe an affirmative consent response from our membership is more in line with our mission and values. Additionally, best practices and the most basic tenets of the GDPR are consent by a data owner for the storage and use of that data. We choose the consent method as it best aligns with the practices of ethical data handling. 

 

As of this past Monday, we have over 40,100 people who have provided this consent (a tick over the 40% mark from when we started). We have had only 2,800 opt-out. As shared with you earlier, we have now stopped our emails, and will take a few weeks to review the data we have and tidy up some last aspects of our GDPR compliance. At that time, we will look at what to do next to enhance our members options. We do NOT intend to delete data of members yet.

 

As I have from the beginning, I thank you for your input and partnership in this endeavor. We will continue to be diligent in maintaining our compliance with GDPR and keep monitoring best practices to live up to our data handling relationship with our members.
