ISOC made the decision a couple of years back to go to 'reception' style
events rather than the formal agenda's meeting. Those used to consist of
almost an hour of introductions round the table which left time for brief
discussions of maybe two topics.
Probably around that same time frame (2009) I asked for an ICANN list to
be added to the ISOC mailman, and it duly was. However it never took off,
at all. It's possible that, between the ISOC Policy list, and many
Chapters' involvement in their regional ALO's, there already exist
sufficient groupings. Also, maybe ICANN is a general rather than a
'special' interest. I guess a SIG might help but it's just more structure
where plenty exists.
What is perhaps lacking is sufficient convening for inter-regional chapter
discussions between ICANN Meetings, if not at the meetings themselves. In
North America we have seen some progress with various Chapters hosting the
ICANN 'readouts' that have replaced remote hubs. These can be successful at
engaging local Chapter members in ICANN matters. However, because these are
all-encompassing, and aimed at general engagement, no aspect is gone into
at great depth. Maybe ISOC policy staff could be prevailed upon to
co-ordinate more 'community forums' than the couple a year we currently
have, with tighter focuses including single ICANN issues. But I know they
do take some effort. .
