[Chapter-delegates] Event sponsorship and GDPR

Hi all,
I (probably like all of you) received this email sent from ISOC's mail
servers about an event organised by Dell, where ISOC is apparently a
sponsor. For most of our members such an event abroad is not really
relevant. Discounts are always nice, but the attention of our members is
something we are *very* careful with too. And the tainted reputation of
the Dell subsidiary organising this, RSA [1], is still something to keep
in mind.
What is the rationale behind putting this particular (commercial) event
in the spotlights by sending out personalised emails? And there are many
equivalent events elsewhere in the world that would be interested in a
global audience of 100.000 ISOC members to advertise to in return for a
(pretty standard) discount. The fact that some event is big and you
have a boot there, makes it actually even less necessary - the members
that are interested will already know about it. We can put a corner on
the website where people can get discounts for events, but that would
not involve mass mailings.
Making commercial offerings tied to the membership of an organisation
seems very risky to me from a GDPR point of few. I was wondering if we
should establish some sort of policy guidelines, who gets to send what
messages to chapter members - most notably commercial external events?
What do you all feel about this?
Kind regards,
Michiel Leenaars

Online Trust Alliance (OTA)
The Internet Society joined forces with the Online Trust Alliance
(OTA) [link: https://www.internetsociety.org/otalliance] in April
last year in order to expand our reach and impact to a broader
group of stakeholders and industry members.
Like the Internet Society, the OTA also has history of working
with their members to promote initiatives that enhance online
trust and security.
Because the OTA operates semi-autonomously, you may not know much
about its work. Find out more here [link:
