Hello everybody,
Undoubtedly, all of you followed the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica affair
and you probably came away with the same alarming conclusion that Facebook
is not fundamentally going to change its ways and that (once you become
dependent) it is hard to quit services like Facebook - where to start?
In response Sally has posted a powerful message
<https://www.internetsociety.org/blog/2018/04/larger-facebook-cambridge-analytica-question-really-signed/>
on the isoc.org website that needs no further comment. Dan York actually
highlighted the POSSE approach as the cornerstone for ISOC's own social
presence, and that seems the way to go.
We at the Chapter Tools Community Project aim to alter your web presence
too, and that of your members and perhaps the world. Step by step, of
course. Today we make another modest contribution to the discussion, which
we believe begins with having suitable and convenient alternatives.
Social media is one of the upcoming features, but first things first: with
this mail we announce the addition of privacy centric search to the Chapter
Toolkit, and (like anything you host yourself) one that you control
yourself. With the toolkit, we provide a self-hosted search tool for the
web that uses different search engines, filters out any cookies and offers
a tracking free result to the user. Of course we also provide a public
instance, but we recommend you use this with your own chapter
domain - this certainly helps to become aware that there is nothing
necessary or normal about invading peoples privacy.
We will also provide some code to embed this in your website which we hope
will be available next week but go ahead and test (and use) the tool
already now at https://search.internetsociety.info. We welcome all of your
comments and questions, and we have started our very own website which can
be found at internetsociety.info. Get out of the search bubble, and open up
your world!
About the Chapter Tools Community Project:
It was started by the Dutch Chapter in november 2016, with the goal of
assisting chapters with their online presence by bringing their needs in
line with ISOC's standards. It aims to save chapters time, so that they can
engage in other activities.
The project consists of a website template, a video conferencing tool and
an 'app store' of chapter utilities that conform to ISOC’s high standards.
16 chapters are now using the website template, the latest additions being
ISOC.fr (France) switching to our template and ISOC.td (Chad) switching to
both our hosting and template.
Kind regards
Alexander Blom, Michiel Leenaars
