Dear Dr Vea,

I am sure I speak for many when I ask you to please reconsider. I share your concern that ISOC has wandered into an area of political debate which it should never have become involved with. I ask you to bear in mind that ISOC is adjusting to a new world in which internet matters are more interconnected with social and political issue than in the past, and that ISOC’s mechanisms have not yet developed to the degree necessary to safely navigate this new world. It is my belief that ISOC should never have commented on this matter, and I am reasonably sure ISOC’s involvement was never officially sanctioned, it is merely the result of people having blogs on the ISOC website which reflect their personal opinions. To me this is evidence that ISOC members, whether staff or committee, should not have personal blogs on the Internet Society website – they will always be understood as official ISOC positions, and not as personal opinions. I do not believe the Internet Society website is a suitable venue for any personal opinions, nor do I think it appropriate for any ISOC member to deliver an official ISOC statement without a formal approval mechanism.

The lack of contact by anyone in ISOC HQ is, of course, inadequate. However, I hope it is not a sign of lack of care, but a sign that ISOC’s management procedures are inadequate to deal with our modern world. Please do not take this lack of contact as an intentional act, so much as a symptom that we have much to improve.

Your work in ISOC is appreciated by many, even those unknown to you. I am sure many ISOC members regret your decision, and deeply regret that this matter has been so poorly handled by ISOC HQ. I humbly ask you to consider that an alternative response may be to become more involved in current moves to improve ISOC’s internal management processes. Your experience in this matter can offer some valuable insights which can help us to improve.

If, however, you consider that you must resign, may I take this opportunity to thank you for all you have done, and to express my sincere regret.

Regards,

Brandt Dainow

Subject: [Chapter-delegates] ISOC-ES' Executive President - RESIGNATION. PUBLIC STATEMENT

I'm a good friend of my friends,

      I'm a Catalan,

            I'm an engineer and

I'm a Citizen with my own views

  (in this order).

Since 1995 when we co-founded ISOC-CAT and later on in 2002 when I helped to "rejuvenate" the ISOC-ES (going from nothing to be one of the chapters of the world with most people involved (700+) plus a board of 14 dedicated an incredible individuals

I have volunteered day by day to start-up chapters, make them grow, stabilize boards and disseminate ISOC's mission and values around the world.

At the light of :

the public statement made by my friend Frederic Donck, (EU bureau director)

the urgent extraordinary meeting that my board had yesterday (hold on a local holiday and without any of the Catalan members on board: neither the President, the Secretary and a vocal, by different reasons)

due to the statement made, signed and urgently distributed by them and made public on this list (not even read by the Catalans)

due that I have been fighting for years to bring bridges among chapters and not to politize our relations

due that this is not my way of work (go sending public statements, without talking each other in advance)

due that I personally find myself overcome by this situation. Where nobody will gain anything at all.

due that I haven't been contacted by any ISOC-HQ official since last night

I do publicly present my RESIGNATION in my post as ISOC-es Executive President

where I have led our beloved association over the last 15 years at the board, and almost 8 as President.

According to our bylaws the VP will guide our association until the next election process.

It has always been a pleasure and an honor to serve ISOC.

It has been (and will be) a source of meeting incredible people and to achieve amazing goals.

It has been an incredible experience to build a Chapter that serves all those territories where "there wasn't a chapter" in Spain

But I don't want that different political views, which (I personally believe) should be expressed out of our scope

break in two pieces our beatiful and loved association. I have never expressed these views as a citizen at any ISOC meeting, and I want to keep it like this until my last minute as President.

Otherways my words will be used "as political propaganda" at any side as they'll yours. Which in turn will eclipse my/our achievements as an internet engineer, and will collide with what I feel by my detained Catalan internet professionals and erode my friendship with my other ISOC colleagues...

I won't admit this to happen at all !

As I told you the values of friendship, being a Catalan and an internet-engineer, are much higher than any political views,

so despite my true sorrow I do RESIGN in my post as Executive President. Hoping that this will ease the situation created.

Urging my colleagues at the board to have an open meeting within this week, with Frederic Donck, Raul Echebarria, Magí Lluch (ISOC-CAT) and others involved to talk and stop acting with "official public statements" which are useless and are misinterpreted out of its context.

Keep up the good work !

        &reu

our meetings have had to solve the fact that we have 8 different sites in 8 different cities, but we made it for years !
