Dear colleagues,
As advanced by Dan, Frédéric Donck wrote an statement on behalf and
representation of ISOC against the Spanish censorship we're suffering these
days in Catalonia. Let me thank you Frédéric, Ceren, Dan, also Kathy Brown
and all people that expressed their solidarity (some of you like Borka and
Christian among them) and supported this action. On behalf of my colleagues
at the Catalan Chapter, big thanks! That statement made a big impact in
Catalonia and has been very useful. Unfortunately, the actions of the
Spanish government against the Catalan Referendum we're going to celebrate
next Sunday, oct 1st are not limited to this. Sadly we all here in
Catalonia expect a very difficult week and we'll need as much help and
support as possible from you all during the following difficult days.
If you agree, I'll collect and publish to our website all solidarity
messages you send to me. From my side this is a real treasure and hopefully
we do not feel alone. Thanks so much again for your support.
However, a part from the solidarity and supporting messages, if there is
still something else we can do to protect democracy and freedom during
these difficult days in Catalonia, there will be very much appreciated. Let
me attach a letter sent yesterday to the European Commission Vice-president
Andrus Ansip by the Secretary of Telecommunications, Cibersecurity and
Digital Society of the Catalan Government, reporting the facts and asking
to make them visible within the EC.
Reports and statements from ISOC and media are necessary but seam are not
affecting the Spanish government at all to abort the referendum and they
continue violating the basic freedom principles we protect. Please, keep
yourself informed about what is happening from the press and if some of you
has direct access to local, regional or national politicians in your
country or even at EU level, please let them know what is happening from
the source sending to them the attached report, and asking them to make
public statements of support. We in Catalonia strongly believe in Europe
and freedom and peace principles. Now is the time we need to be united
against those that not only violate freedom of speech, but the core
European principles of freedom.
Warmest regards from Barcelona.
