Subject: Notes: SecuretheInternet.org meeting at RightsCon

Thanks to everyone who attended the Secure the Internet meeting at RightsCon as well as to everyone who has emailed to join the mailing list over the last two months. If you would like to be on the mailing list, used for SecuretheInternet.org signers to share global news and developments related to encryption, please email Nathan White, <mailto:nathan at accessnow.org> nathan at accessnow.org.

I want to provide short notes from the meeting to our signers as well as some updates.

1. We asked people at the meeting two key question: How should the website progress; what is most helpful?

The securetheinternet.org website is likely to expand in 2017. We are considering adding some space for news about encryption developments around the world and resources on encryption. This material will be separate from the signers to make clear that none of the material is endorsed or generally supported by any of you. If you have material that you would like to include please send it along. We are still developing this next phase and we will let you know when it’s ready to move forward.

We have also had it recommended to reach out more to the technical community for support. Some coalition members have offered to do some outreach in this area - we are constantly adding new names to the website so if you would like to do some targeted outreach let me know and I can send you some form language (or feel free to draft your own!). Note that if there are prominent names to be added as signers it is best if they email myself and Nathan White directly rather than go through the form on the page - we try to keep up with signers but it can be difficult to go through them all for names we recognize.

2. Updates: Brazil, the European Union, and Turkey

We are grateful to some of our signers for providing substantive updates on the state of the encryption debates in different areas, include the WhatsApp controversy in Brazil, the developments with the European Parliament and use of open government laws in the EU, and the increased adoption of encryption tools in Turkey and legal ramifications of use.

3. Areas for additional research

If groups are looking for places to engage on encryption, there were several ideas thrown out. One participant asked for more research on how encryption interplays with international legal frameworks. Another recommended funding or encouragement to contribute to the expansion of encryption libraries. There was interest in guidelines on decryption tools and technologies that should be used in light of increased use of encryption; on the flip side there was also interest in greater education about how to defend against malware for activists particularly.

4. Recommendations

Two quick notes for recommendations from participants: one cautioned about forgetting the debate over device encryption and reminded us that this was broader than messaging; another encouraged positive framings, including about system strength, instead of focusing only on the negative side.

Finally, thanks to you all for a great year fighting for our ability to use encryption. When we launched securetheinternet.org in January 2016 we had 195 signers. Today, we have over 302 signers listed on the website across more than 50 countries around the world.

Onward!,

Amie and Nathan
