[Chapter-delegates] ISOC global emailings

Hi,

fyi: ISOC global created a mailing list for African Chapter leaders for this purpose only a few years ago. It turn out that Victor does use that, he ALSO sends these emails seperately… with an "apology for cross posting"

Thanks Joly…  yes, Victor used the To: field to send to hundreds of recipients. And yes a bcc could have been used, yet I do not agree since there is a list already and he ALSO sends to the list. And I think a list is a good idea rather than bcc. 

This is poor practice and it still makes me cringe that an ISOC employee does it, repeatedly for many months without a single manager or ISOC colleague suggesting that it is less than ideal.

I do not blame Victor for this. I do not hold him responsible, he did it more than a dozen times over many months. How long has he worked at ISOC? Who is his supervisor? Does his supervisor know that there is anything wrong with this?  Who gave him the list of email addresses or where did he get it from? 

This is simply poor ISOC leadership. I told Kathy - when she started - the importance of netiquette…  she smiled and agreed and promised "to look into it" ..

Actually I do think it helped. As an outcome we saw that the previous Chairman of three years? did not see anything wrong with it until it was pointed out to him… yes, we all get tens of thousands of emails every month Bob. If we are not to set the example, who will? Just because spam is a huge industry, does that mean to say we should support it? 

Is it even possible to get more executive management (at ISOC) to be aware of the importance of this?  

A few years ago, I tried to explain this to one of the senior managers. I used many emails and meetings and discussions and he finally promised me these basic guidelines would be taught to all staff. Unfortunately he is one of the most corrupt people I have ever met and whom I know is still on the management team. So….

Yes, we also have one in Africa… these were sent 'in addition to' that….
